Although still trailing his Republican challenger, former Rep. Bob Beauprez, Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper has closed the gap,
according to a new poll.
The Qunnipiac University poll released today shows Beauprez with a 46-42 percent lead, but gains among women and independents have allowed the incumbent Democrat to close a 10-point deficit.
Libertarian candidate Matthew Hess has 5 percent, with 1 percent for Green Party candidate Harry Hempy, and 6 percent said they were undecided. If Hess is not in the race, Beauprez leads 48 percent to Hickenlooper's 43 percent.
"After seeming to waver in our last survey, women and independent voters pull Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper back from the abyss and reinvigorate a race that's very close," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University poll.
Among women voters, Hickenlooper holds a 50-41 percent advantage, which is an improvement compared with last month's poll when he trailed Beauprez among women by a 47-46 percent count.
The
RealClearPolitics average of polls gives Hickenlooper a 0.4 percent lead.
Only 16 percent of voters said they might change their minds before Election Day.
The candidates will meet tonight in Colorado Springs for their second debate this week.
On Monday, both Hickenlooper and Beauprez appeared to fall off message,
reports the Denver Post.
Hickenlooper was tripped up by a question about voters' decision to legalize marijuana, saying it was "reckless" and that he had always opposed it.
For his part, Beauprez said he did not favor compelling illegal immigrants to return to their native country before re-entering the U.S. legally. That contradicted with previous statements he made, including calling the re-entry "a cleansing process."
