President Donald Trump privately has expressed concerns about Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, “for a while,” according to a White House source of CNN’s Jim Acosta.
A source in the White House told Acosta that Trump has been “fretting about Fauci for a while,” and that the president thinks "everybody is trying make themselves look good," and has been fixated on Fauci and Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar. The source said that Trump’s comments about the doctor as, “why isn’t Fauci saying nice things about me?”
Earlier on Monday, Trump drew attention by retweeting a “FireFauci” hashtag after the doctor, who is a central figure on the White House’s coronavirus task force, said that lives would have been saved if the federal government had acted sooner in responding to the coronavirus outbreak.
Former Republican congressional candidate DeAnna Lorraine tweeted on Sunday: “Fauci is now saying that had Trump listened to the medical experts earlier he could've saved more lives. Fauci was telling people on February 29th that there was nothing to worry about and it posed no threat to the US public at large. Time to #FireFauci…”
Trump retweeted this with the comment, “Sorry Fake News, it’s all on tape. I banned China long before people spoke up.”
Although Fauci has come out in support of Trump’s travel restrictions on China, he has criticized the president’s administration for not doing enough to combat the coronavirus in the early days of the outbreak.
