Prominent Climate Scientist Admits Document Theft

By    |   Wednesday, 22 February 2012 10:13 AM EST

Internationally recognized climate scientist Peter H. Gleick has openly admitted that he stole sensitive internal documents from prominent conservative think tank The Heartland Institute and leaked them to the press, reports Fox News.

Gleick, a noted hydroclimatologist and author of the annual report “The World’s Water,” said that he received an anonymous tip off via mail that Heartland was engaged in efforts to deliberately deceive the public about climate science and policy.

Gleick says that he released the sensitive documents to expose the truth, acknowledging that using deceitful tactics to do so was the result of a lapse in ethical judgment.

“In a serious lapse of my own professional judgment and ethics, I solicited and received additional materials directly from the Heartland Institute under someone else’s name,” Gleick wrote in his blog on the Huffington Post. “My judgment was blinded by my frustration with the ongoing efforts — often anonymous, well-funded, and coordinated — to attack climate science and scientists and prevent this debate . . . nevertheless I deeply regret my own actions in this case.”

Gleick, acknowledging the wrongdoing, followed suit by resigning from the National Center for Science Education.
