President Donald Trump slammed the Cleveland Indians baseball franchise shortly after it was announced they would be changing their name over the weekend.
“Oh no! What is going on?” the president wrote on Twitter. “This is not good news, even for ‘Indians.’ Cancel culture at work!”
Trump has previously defended the franchise name, along with the Washington Redskins football team, which changed its name before the NFL season, by saying the names are that of “strength, not weakness,” Yahoo reported.
Cleveland has had the name “Indians” since 1915, but Native American groups and others have pressured it to change the name, saying it is is insensitive and racist.
Cleveland had already abandoned its old Chief Wahoo mascot and logo two years ago after the league said it was “no longer appropriate.”
Cleveland had also announced in July amid the social justice protests that it was considering changing its name.
