Clemens Plans to Question House Hearing's Validity

Tuesday, 12 July 2011 11:32 AM EDT

WASHINGTON — Roger Clemens plans to begin his defense against charges of lying to Congress by questioning whether the investigation into whether he used performance-enhancing drugs was proper.

A lawyer for the baseball star revealed the defense plan Tuesday morning as the judge considered what instructions to give the jury scheduled to be picked later in the day.

Clemens' lawyer says the hearing that the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee held three years ago had nothing to do with Congress' responsibility for legislation. He said the hearing was only concerned with airing a "credibility contest" between Clemens and his longtime trainer, Brian McNamee, who said he injected the pitcher with steroids and human growth hormone.

Clemens denied those allegations and has been charged with perjury, false statements and obstruction of Congress.
