Family Has Taken Santa Photo Every Year Since 1955

For 60 years, the Wilson family of Seattle has followed the unique Christmas tradition of posing on Santa's lap for a photograph.

Today, by adding in all the spouses and children, there's no way Santa has enough lap room for them all!

The tradition began in 1955 with just one Wilson, when young Steve Wilson first climbed on Santa's knee, and was joined by brother Scott in 1957.

Today, in their most recent photo taken in the same place, Nordstrom, 10 members of the growing Wilson family crowd into the photo.

"It's the history of our family," Steve told King5. "It just happens to be with Santa Claus."

It wasn't even a Nordstrom when the tradition began — it was a Frederick and Nelson store — but over the years, nothing has stopped the Wilsons from continuing their holiday snapshot.

"We would plan it as a family, the four of us. Time flies and you don't even realize it," Steve told USA Today.

Every one of the photos is displayed on the family's Facebook account.

The complete family only missed one year, 1978, when Scott couldn't make it.

"We never said, 'are we really doing this again? We were just like, 'Let's go, let's go,' " Steve told King5.

The worst year was 1961, he said, when, "My mom had knit these really heavy sweaters, God bless her, but they're wool, and we have these coats over them, and we were hot, and Wendy's (Steve's sister) crying," he said.

Paging though the photos, you can see Wilson family members gradually aging, the family growing with the addition of spouses and grandchildren and hair and clothing styles changing as the years pass by.

In 1978, when Scott couldn't make it, Steve said: "Having a blast! Scott is MIA, I am ready for the disco, Mike looks like Steve is goosing him and Wendy has that Farrah Fawcett thing going on."

The Wilson parents got into the photos beginning in 1990. Two years ago was the patriarch Woody Wilson's last photo — he died at the age of 94 a month later. However, this year, on Dec. 6, Steve wore one of his father's old jackets "so in that way, he's in the picture," he told USA Today.
