With a funeral service for the late Whitney Houston taking place in New Jersey this Saturday in Newark, Gov. Chris Christie has taken some steps to honor the singer's legacy.
Flags will be flown at half-staff, the governor has decreed.
“Obviously, Whitney Houston was an important part of the fabric -- the cultural fabric of this state,” Christie told reporters. He likened her talents to those of other Garden State greats -- Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen and Count Basie.
“Her accomplishments in her life were a source of great pride” for New Jersey, Christie added.
