NEW YORK - New Jersey Governor Chris Christie Thursday canceled construction of a new Hudson River commuter rail tunnel because the project could run billions of dollars over budget.
The Republican governor, in a statement, said the final budget is expected to top $11 billion and could exceed $14 billion, compared to a current budget of $8.7 billion.
Using the project's formal name, Christie said: "The Access to the Region's Core project is just not a financially viable project that we can responsibly move forward." (Reporting by Joan Gralla; Editing by James Dalgleish)
