Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel fired off a warning to taxpayers in an interview Wednesday: You might have to pay for President Donald Trump's infrastructure projects.

"You're going to have to be honest with people: it takes money," Emanuel, who served as one of former President Barack Obama's chiefs of staff, said during a The Wall Street Journal event. "When we built schools and roads in Iraq, we didn't do it on tax credits."

Trump has touted a plan to rebuild the nation's infrastructure. It could cost $1 trillion or more, and it is still unclear where the money will come from because a formal version of the plan has not yet been released.

Emanuel, however, said relying on tax credits to fund the plan — an idea Trump and his team have talked about in the past — is "fairy dust."

A Politico report this week, meanwhile, speculated whether Trump's plan to rebuild America's bridges roads, tunnels, and more could actually fall flat because of GOP infighting, Democratic resistance, and questions about the cost.
