Chicago's Cardinal Francis George thinks Illinois' new same-sex-marriage law will help undermine the "bedrock" of society.
"We have lived with bad laws before, and we will do our best to adjust to this one for the sake of social harmony," George wrote in a letter published in Catholic parish bulletins.
"The law . . . will contribute over the long run to the further dissolution of marriage and family life, which are the bedrock of any society."
But when approached by the
Chicago Sun Times to comment on whether he would deny communion to three Chicago Democrats who spearheaded the law, he was mum.
The three are Gov. Pat Quinn, who's expected to sign the bill into law this week, House Speaker Michael Madigan, and Senate President John Cullerton.
"What's the point of talking?" George told a Sun-Times reporter, adding that further commentary would be "creating a story of good guys and bad guys . . . So, I don't see any point in talking."
The bill becomes law in June.
