Author Chad Kultgen set up a fake website pretending to be a 26-year-old woman promising to have an abortion unless pro-lifers gave him $1 million — all to sell his latest book.

The website ProlifeAntiwoman.com said that a graduate student was going to have an abortion on July 10 if the money wasn't raised, all "to give the American public a concrete example that the conservative right in America doesn't actually care about the life of a child, they care about controlling the lives and choices of women."

The website was supposed to start receiving donations on July 7, when it was revealed that the whole thing was a hoax set up by Kultgen to promote his novel "Strange Animals."

Now on the website is an image of Kultgen's book along with links where readers may purchase the book.

At the top of the website it says "the previous website was an augmented excerpt from the novel."

According to The Daily Beast, Kultgen's "publicity stunt . . . has already backfired spectacularly."

Several detractors, who were not amused by the hoax, have responded by leaving one-star reviews for him on Amazon.com.

"To use that kind of shock marketing strategy to push a book is just WRONG," one reviewer wrote.

Kultgen's publisher HarperCollins said that it had nothing to do with the website.

"'Strange Animals' is a book that deals with controversial issues. We knew Chad intended to promote it in a provocative way but HarperCollins did not participate in the creation or promotion of the website," the publisher said in a statement to The Daily Beast.
