Sheriff: More Human Bones Scattered at Cemetery

CHICAGO (AP) — A sheriff says an area of a historic black cemetery near Chicago where workers allegedly dug up remains to resell plots is so saturated with discarded bones that they are rising to the ground's surface.

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said Monday that the bones are surfacing in a back section of Burr Oak Cemetery in Alsip where cemetery officials said only broken headstones and debris was discarded.

He says archaeologists assigned by a bankruptcy judge to examine Burr Oak as part of a possible sale of the cemetery have found evidence suggesting workers may have discarded the remains of some 200 more people than initially thought.

Four workers have pleaded not guilty to several felony charges.
