About half of the Diamond Princess cruise ship passengers who tested positive for the coronavirus showed no symptoms of the disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
According to a CDC report, 712 passengers and crew members onboard the ship were infected with COVID-19, about half of whom, 331, displayed no symptoms prior to their being tested according report shared with CNN.
The CDC said that this could have contributed to the spread of the disease on the ship, which had a notably high rate of infection. The agency also found traces of the virus "on a variety of surfaces in cabins of both symptomatic and asymptomatic infected passengers up to 17 days after cabins were vacated on the Diamond Princess but before disinfection procedures had been conducted.”
The Grand Princess, another cruise ship that was quarantined off the coast of California, had 78 positive cases of COVID-19 out of 469 people tested.
"The Diamond Princess and Grand Princess had more than 800 total Covid-19 cases, including 10 deaths," the CDC reports, noting that "Cases linked with cruise travel have been reported to CDC in at least 15 states.”
