Father Edward Beck: Church Won't Change on Gay Marriage

By    |   Thursday, 21 March 2013 06:04 PM EDT

The Roman Catholic Church’s views on gay marriage are not likely to change under Pope Francis, although there may be more tolerance of it, according to veteran religious commentator Father Edward Beck.

“I do not see the position certainly on gay marriage changing,’’ Beck — a contributor to “CBS This Morning,” CNN and Fox News — told Newsmax TV’s “The Steve Malzberg Show.’’

“But you can support someone’s right to believe differently, act differently and have equal rights without supporting them from a moral perspective.’’

Beck agreed with host Steve Malzberg that the church’s views on gays and lesbians, celibacy, and other hot-button issues are more of a policy of the teachings of the church than a political stance.

“With regard to sexuality and marriage is procreation . . . as far as the Catholic Church is concerned,’’ he said.

“And so, of course, with gay relationships that is not possible in a natural sexual expression, procreation.

“That’s why the birth control teaching exists, that’s why masturbation teaching exists. It’s all about the sexual act cannot be independent of procreation.’’
