A new acting chief of the Capitol Police was named Sunday following the resignation of the previous one in the aftermath of the riot at the U.S. Capitol, according to a statement on the agency's website.

Yogananda Pittman, who joined the department in 2001 and rose through the ranks to become assistant chief of police for protective and intelligence operations in 2018, will be the acting chief.

Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund resigned after he was harshly criticized by lawmakers in the immediate aftermath of the siege at the Capitol on Wednesday, according to The Hill.

In addition, following the riot, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., asked for and received the resignation of Sergeant at Arms of the Senate Michael Stenger, according to NBC Washington.

Sergeant at Arms of the House Paul Irving also quit, leaving by the weekend only Architect of the Capitol J. Brett Blanton on the Capitol Police Board, which oversees security on Capitol Hill.

Pittman has since joined the board, which is now headed by Jennifer Hemingway, who also is serving as acting Senate sergeant at arms.

In her two decades on the force, Pittman has experience coordinating presidential inaugurations, WUSA9 reported.

She has also been in leadership positions in the department, including investigating the disciplinary appeals and grievances against employees of the force.
