Florida Sues BP on Third Anniversary of Oil Spill

Saturday, 20 April 2013 12:21 PM EDT

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida's attorney general has filed a lawsuit against BP and Halliburton on the three-year anniversary of the 2010 Gulf oil spill.

Pam Bondi filed the 40-page lawsuit Saturday in federal court in Panama City.

It comes a day after Mississippi officials filed their own lawsuit over the spill before the three-year statute of limitations expires.

Florida's lawsuit includes several claims under federal, state and maritime law and focuses on Florida's economic losses. Bondi argues that the 2010 spill cost the state a variety of tax revenues. The state also seeks punitive damages.

The disaster killed 11 rig workers in the Gulf of Mexico and fouled 1,100 miles of beaches and marsh along the Gulf coast.
