Washington, D.C. will have increased security during the Senate impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump, according to the Mayor Muriel Bowser.
Bowser made her remarks during a press conference on Thursday. They were detailed in a report by The Hill.
“There’s still some very volatile events happening which require extra security, the impeachment process going up through the next national special security event that we all have to be mindful of, I would look at that as the time period where we are definitely going to have extra security,” Bowser said.
Following the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol, the National Guard was called into the city to provide security for President Joe Biden’s inauguration and extra fencing went up round the Capitol.
“We don’t want extra troops or fences to be a long-term fixture,” Bowser said. The street, bridge, and Metro stop closures are over, and many guardsmen have left the city since the inauguration.”
The impeachment trial is expected to begin the week of Feb. 8 with the chamber’s 100 senators serving as jurors.
