President Donald Trump has “no choice” but to extend guidelines issued two weeks ago to battle an explosive increase in infections from the fast-spreading coronavirus, former Homeland Security adviser Tom Bossert said Sunday.

In remarks on ABC News’ “This Week,” Bossert said it’s too early to ease up on the stay-at-home and social distancing interventions.

“At this stage, as it [the 15-day guidelines] expires Monday …the president has no choice but to extend this national blanket intervention order,” he said.

“I would argue… we can see some evidence this is working,” he added.

“If we hadn’t taken these extreme measures we would expect to see an even higher number” of COVID-19 infections, Bossert said. “We have to stay this course.”

He added his own message to people who disregard the guidelines.

“We have to stop cheating,” he said. “Even if a small percentage steps out of these lines… it has a significant effect on this infection curve.”
