Blue Angels Leader Steps Down after Safety Issue

Friday, 27 May 2011 05:36 PM EDT

PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) — The Navy's elite Blue Angels squadron says its commanding officer is leaving the team after the team canceled a performance at the U.S. Naval Academy because of a safety issue.

The team said Friday that the departure of Cmdr. Dave Koss is voluntary.

The team began the safety review after four of the six F/A-18 Hornets flew too low while performing a diamond formation recently at an air show in Lynchburg, Va.

The team also cancelled planned Memorial Day weekend performances at an air show in Millville, N.J.
