WashPost's Blake: Maher Targets Wrong Republican in Minn.'s Kline

Bill Maher said on Friday that he would work to defeat Minnesota Republican John Kline in the November congressional elections, but Washington Post columnist Aaron Blake says the HBO comedian's dollars are "probably going to be poorly spent."

"That's because Kline, quite simply, isn't a Democratic target," Blake said in his "The Fix" blog late Friday after Maher made the announcement on his "Real Time" program.

Maher, who donated $1 million to the Priorities USA Action super PAC to help re-elect President Barack Obama, announced his decision in his "Flip a District" contest that seeks help from viewers in targeting Republican candidates.

Besides Kline, the other finalists were Reps. Blake Farenthold of Texas, Mike Coffman of Colorado, and Renee Ellmers of North Carolina.

Kline, 67, has represented the Twin Cities suburbs since 2003. He is a retired Marine Corps colonel who serves as chairman of the House Education and Workforce Committee.

His Democratic opponent this fall is former state Rep. Mike Obermueller, whom he beat in 2012 by eight points.

In his blog, Blake noted that while Kline's district supported Obama in both elections, the Republican "has never taken less than 54 percent of the vote, including when he was an actual target in the 2012 election."

As for Obermueller, he is "dealing with a much less favorable environment," the blogger said, noting that The Cook Political Report "has rated 29 Republican seats as being potentially in play in the 2014 election, [but] doesn't even include Kline among the least-vulnerable on that list."

Blake quoted one Democratic strategist's take on Maher's plan: "Sometimes money could be spent in a way that makes a difference or in a way that gets a headline. This is the latter."
