Earthquake Rattles Beverly Hills

By    |   Monday, 03 September 2012 08:31 AM EDT

Beverly Hills was rattled by a small earthquake early Monday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The shallow 3.3 magnitude quake hit at 3:26 a.m. local time and was centered one mile from West Hollywood, two miles from Century City and eight miles from Los Angeles Civic Center, the USGS said.

There were no immediate reports of damage, according to The Associated Press.

It was the second earthquake of at least 3.0 magnitude in the nearby area in the past 10 days, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Local police and fire departments were beginning to assess the effect of the quake.

Beverly Hills police watch commander Sgt. Michael Publicker said his station has been getting numerous calls from anxious citizens.

“Every alarm in the city is going off,” he said. However, no signs of structural damage had been seen. Likewise, the Los Angeles Fire Department went into "Earthquake Emergency Mode" to assess any damage, but concluded the citywide survey at around 4:10 a.m. local time without incident, according to the Huffington Post.

Beverly Hills is located on a fault called the West Beverly Hills Lineament, an extension of the powerful Newport-Inglewood Fault System that caused the second-deadliest quake in California's history.
