The second Trump administration's Make America Healthy Again agenda should get an "A-plus" grade for its work to root out highly processed food that has been hurting the health of the American people, Dr. Ben Carson said Monday on Newsmax.
"It's very good; I would give it an A-plus because what we're seeing is real cooperation between Health and Human Services, Department of Agriculture, FDA, CMS, and various others who are cooperating with each other, with the understanding that we have a significant problem over the last few years.
"Our life expectancy has been going down," Carson, a renowned neurosurgeon who was the secretary of Housing and Urban Development in the first Trump administration, told "National Report."
"Many other industrialized nations, it continues to go up. What's going on?"
The overreliance on highly processed foods is being rooted out of American dietary guidelines by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., according to Carson.
"Our analysis demonstrates that we're using so many highly processed foods, we're leaching all the important nutrition nutrients out of them and substituting them with artificial flavors, artificial colors, artificial sweeteners, this, that, and the other," Carson told host Shaun Kraisman. "And you know, God gave us these foods for our health, and we're altering those.
"So we're turning that around, recognizing you start with the soil."
RFK Jr. has been maligned by anti-President Donald Trump activists, but he is speaking truth to power now in the face of obstruction and activism.
"The hard truth is that our government has been lying to us to protect corporate profit-taking, telling us that these foodlike substances were beneficial to public health," Kennedy said at a news conference last month. "Federal policy promoted and subsidized highly processed foods and refined carbohydrates, and turned a blind eye to the disastrous consequences.
"Today, the lies stop.
"The new guidelines recognize that whole, nutrient-dense food is the most effective path to better health and lower healthcare costs. Protein and healthy fats are essential, and we're wrongly discouraged in prior dietary guidelines.
"We are ending the war on saturated fats."
Carson hailed the latter, giving an anecdote on a recent trip to a public school lunchroom with Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins.
"I'm very encouraged that we're looking at the right kinds of things that are backed by science," Carson said. "You know, for example, there was this war on whole milk because we felt that the saturated fats would harm our development.
"Secretary Rollins and I were at a school in Pennsylvania a couple of weeks ago. We were serving the kids their lunch, and it was amazing how many of them had never had whole milk before.
"We gave them all a carton of whole milk, and they just loved it. They said, 'This is the best milk I've ever had.'
"Well, you know, that's very important for membrane development, brain development.
"All of these things are developing in the right way — if we use real whole foods that we were given by our creator, instead of trying to make convenience and profit the key."
