Ben Carson, secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, this week lauded the Interagency Council on Homelessness as "effective."
But it turns out the federal agency is slated to be eliminated under the budget proposed by President Donald Trump, The Guardian reports.
Carson's praise came as he defended huge proposed cuts to HUD, saying "we have to stop the bleeding if we're going to get healing."
Sen. Susan Collins, a Maine Republican, said killing off the homelessness agency would a "huge mistake."
"I recognize we have budget constraints, but hope we can do better than this," she said of the proposed budget cuts.
