New York Attorney General Letitia James sent a letter to televangelist Jim Bakker last week warning him to stop promoting a “Silver Solution” as a coronavirus cure, reports The Hill.
“The 2019 novel coronavirus poses serious consequences to public health, and consumers are concerned as to how they can best protect themselves and their families,” James said in the letter. “Your show’s segment may mislead consumers as to the effectiveness of the Silver Solution product in protecting against the current outbreak.”
Bakker has long promoted “Silver Solution” to cure all sorts of ailments.
The cease-and-desist letter sent by James’ office cited a Feb. 12 episode of Bakker’s show where Bakker asked guest Sherrill Sellman whether the $125 solution sold on his website would work against the virus.
“Let’s say it hasn’t been tested on this strain of the coronavirus, but it’s been tested on other strains of the coronavirus and has been able to eliminate it within 12 hours,” she said.
The World Health Organization said there is no known FDA approved medicine or vaccine able to prevent or treat COVID-19 at this time.
“As we experience more cases of coronavirus, it is imperative that New Yorkers remain calm, but stay vigilant,” the attorney general said in a statement.
“In addition to being mindful about our health, we must also beware of unscrupulous actors who attempt to take advantage of this fear and anxiety to scam or deceive consumers. I encourage anyone who believes they are the victim of a scam or predatory action to contact my office and file a complaint," she added.
The novel coronavirus, which started in Wuhan, China, has infected more than 114,000 people worldwide and killed 4,005.
