New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday that Americans should be “very skeptical” about a coronavirus vaccine, even if it’s approved by the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In an interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” on Monday, the Democrat governor blamed President Donald Trump’s administration for eroding public trust in the FDA and CDC.

“I don’t believe the American people are that confident,” Cuomo said. “You’re going to say to the American people now, ‘Here’s a vaccine. It was new, it was done quickly, but trust this federal administration and their health administration that it’s safe, and we’re not 100% sure of the consequences?’ I think it’s going to be a very skeptical American public about taking the vaccine, and they should be.”

He added that New York’s own top health officials will review any coronavirus vaccine that becomes available before he will declare that it’s safe for his constituents.

“I believe all across the country, you’re going to need someone other than this FDA and this CDC saying it’s safe,” Cuomo said.

When asked if a change in the White House would restore trust in those agencies, Cuomo said: “If this administration continued, the CDC … and the FDA doesn’t have any credibility.”
