WSJ: Amazon May Want to Add Online Pay-TV Service

By    |   Tuesday, 21 January 2014 09:22 PM EST

Internet commercial giant Amazon may be interested in launching an online pay-TV service with channels like the ones available through cable and satellite, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

The Journal said Amazon has approached at least three big media conglomerates seeking rights to distribute their TV channels online.

Amazon already offers some shows and movies on demand for subscribers to Amazon Prime, the company's free shipping service, the Journal noted, and it has thousands of movies and TV shows available to stream online, competing with Netflix, USA Today reported.

Amazon denied there would be such a launch.

"We continue to build selection for Prime Instant Video and create original shows at Amazon Studios, but we are not planning to license television channels or offer a pay-TV service," Amazon said.

Other companies are trying similar Internet-based TV services, including Sony and Google, the Journal noted.

Also, Intel Corp said Tuesday that it sold its Internet TV-related technology to Verizon, which could use it to offer an online pay-TV service sometime, the Journal said.

Companies hoping to launch Internet TV services want to capture viewers who have dropped traditional pay-TV connections — or would like to — because they're frustrated with the old technology or its rising costs, the Journal reported.
