Amazon has a secret healthcare project exploring digital-age frontiers like electronic medical records and telemedicine, CNBC reported Wednesday.
Dubbed 1492, the skunkworks team, headquartered in Seattle, could potentially uncover lucrative ways to help patients and doctors navigate the healthcare system, CNBC reported.
For example, the team is looking at opportunities that involve "pushing and pulling data from legacy electronic medical record systems" that if successful, could be made available to both consumers and their physicians, according to CNBC.
The team also aims to build a platform for telemedicine that'd make it easier for people to have virtual consultations with doctors.
"Anyone who aspires to help consumers navigate our health system and is digitally capable should find the market conditions ripe for entry," former White House chief technology officer Aneesh Chopra told CNBC.
With the project, comes jobs, CNBC reported; multiple listings are available under the keyword "a1.492."
But 1492 isn't the only team inside Amazon working in health and life sciences, CNBC reported. Its cloud operation, Amazon Web Services, has hired health experts to beat out Microsoft and Google for contracts with large hospitals and pharmaceutical vendors — and has invested in a cancer-testing startup called Grail.
Its Amazon business team, already selling medical supplies, is also looking into the pharmacy business, CNBC reported.
