Political activist Angela Davis, who in the past had ties to the Communist and Black Panther Parties, criticized capitalism and President Donald Trump in a college campus speech last week.

According to Breitbart, Davis told a crowd of students at Texas State University on Friday people need to "resist" Trump's presidency.

"1,459 days [of Trump's first term] to go; 1,459 more days of resistance," Davis said.

She added, "Families are destroyed by the Trump administration's immigration policy."

Davis cited the House GOP's failed bid to pass new healthcare legislation as one example of how she felt the resistance movement is making progress.

Later in the speech, Davis — a former college professor who was the Communist Party USA's vice presidential candidate in the 1980 and 1984 elections — said she's not in favor of diversity in the current American society.

"I'm not interested in diversifying in the capitalist apparatus," she said, before calling Trump a "billionaire capitalist … He thinks he's running a company; he's always talking about making deals. We're supposed to be a democracy. He doesn't read."

Davis also said, "Capitalism and racism have always been intertwined."

Davis was involved in a 1970 incident during which a courthouse in Marin County, Calif. was overtaken by four men. Davis was alleged to have organized the crime, and the weapons used during it were registered to her.

A judge and three members of the Black Panther Party died in a shootout, and Davis was later captured. She was found not guilty on several charges during her 1972 trial.

An opinion piece about Davis' speech appeared in The University Star newspaper. The author, Texas State freshman Carrington Tatum, argued that Davis is not a terrorist — which Texas State student Colton Duncan called her leading up to the speech.

"Duncan should not call Dr. Davis a terrorist because it perpetuates the narrative that black people are dangerous even when they are not," Tatum wrote.

"Mass media has been used to discredit many black historical figures since their prime years in the '60s and '70s. This only serves to draw attention to the double standard of how stories are told and the way people are portrayed in the media based on their race."
