Man Accused of Giving Abortion Drug to Take Plea

Friday, 06 September 2013 09:16 PM EDT

Court papers show a Tampa man will admit in court to tricking his pregnant ex-girlfriend into taking a pill he believed would cause her to have a miscarriage.

According to a plea agreement filed Friday in federal court, 28-year-old John Welden will plead guilty to tampering with a consumer product and conspiracy to commit mail fraud. A hearing is scheduled for Monday.

The agreement recommends 13 years and eight months in prison. He faced a possible life sentence if convicted of his original charge, killing an unborn child.

Welden's father is a prominent fertility doctor. Prosecutors say Welden forged his father's signature to obtain the abortion drug Cytotec, relabeled it as an antibiotic and tricked his former girlfriend into taking it. She miscarried in March.
