A North Carolina abortion clinic has been shuttered after investigators found it botched the use of a pregnancy-terminating drug, which in one case forced a patient to undergo surgery.
The suspension of A Preferred Woman’s Health Center in Charlotte by the state Department of Health and Human Services involved the drug Methotrexate, which is used to chemically induce abortions, according to The
Charlotte Observer.
The investigation concluded that an injectable version of the drug was administered to patients to swallow from a cup.
The Charlotte Observer reports that a 19-year-old woman who was given the drug orally returned to the clinic a month later -- still pregnant.
To proceed with the termination, she had to undergo a "surgical abortion procedure," state documents show.
The clinic is part of a chain that also operates in South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, and Tennessee, but it's not known if any other facilities have been affected, the newspaper said.
Last December, the clinic was cited for having nitrous oxide and oxygen stored in unsecured cabinets, and having an emergency kit with expired medications. It also found the clinic was not effectively sterilizing instruments, the Observer reported.
Lois Turner, who is identified as the owner of the clinic, could not be reached by the newspaper for comment.
