Anti-abortion advocates are making significant headway throughout the United States, passing some of the most restrictive abortion laws ever, The Washington Post reported.

And for the first time in years, they now believe their ultimate goal of endling legal abortions entirely is within sight.

Their efforts come as President Donald Trump signed legislation aimed at cutting off federal funding to Planned Parenthood and other groups that perform abortions. It was a move widely praised by conservatives, The New York Times noted.

Along with Trump's actions, comes a fresh push to restrict abortions in individual states, So far in the 2017 state legislative session, five states have approved major abortion restrictions and 28 legislatures are considering banning some of all abortions, the Post noted.

Arkansas has already passed a number of anti-abortion laws, including one requiring doctors to look into a woman's pregnancy history to make certain she is not getting an abortion based on gender selection, the newspaper reported. The state has also banned the most common abortion procedure employed in the second trimester, the Post said.

And a new law in Wyoming requires doctors to offer an ultrasound and a chance to hear the fetal heartbeat during abortion counseling, according to the Post.

Elizabeth Nash with the abortion rights research group Guttmacher Institute said there is a race in conservative states to enact strict abortion laws in hopes of being the one which ends up in the U.S. Supreme Court, the Post reported.

"One of these states are looking to be that state to enact the law that ends up at the Supreme Court and overturns Roe v. Wade," she said. "That's what we're watching for."
