A woman died Wednesday after being found with a rotting leg and other signs of neglect, leading to three family members being charged in the case.
Norma Dunlap, 88, of Charleston, West Virginia, was found with numerous bed sores, dried feces on her back, and was covered in insects, police said, The Charleston Gazette-Mail reported.
Dunlap's left leg was “rotting from the knee down to her ankle,” according to police. Conditions in the home were said to be “deplorable,” with feces and broken glass on the floors, trash throughout, and bugs on Dunlop’s bed and the floor, the newspaper said.
Dunlap’s daughter Lisa Dunlap was her primary caregiver, and she also was cared for by granddaughter Kayla Rogers and husband John, who were parents of two children living in the home, the Gazette-Mail reported. Methamphetamine smoking devices were reportedly found next to the bed where the children slept.
The three adults were arrested and face charges for the death and the home’s conditions, the Gazette-Mail reported. Lisa Dunlap was charged with abuse or neglect of an incapacitated adult, and the Rogerses were both charged with child neglect. All three are felony charges, and more charges could be added since Norma Dunlap subsequently died.
The three adults are being held at South Central Regional Jail, the Gazette-Mail reported.
