A woman was fired for allegedly baking laxatives into brownies for a co-worker's going-away party at a Michigan company.
The woman, a 47-year-old employee of MMI Engineered Solutions in Saline, Michigan, wasn't charged and her name hasn't been released, according to the Ann Arbor News.
Saline Police Chief Jerrod Hart told the publication that officers were called to the business after an employee tipped off the company that the woman planned to put laxatives in the brownies, which were confiscated before they could be eaten.
The suspect, who reportedly had an ongoing dispute with the departing employee, initially denied putting laxatives in the brownies but fessed up once she was told they would be forensically tested. She avoided criminal charges because the brownies weren't eaten.
"A lot of times you see it in movies or TV shows where someone tries to do this or play a joke, but it's very serious," Hart told the Ann Arbor News. "It's a criminal act."
Laxatives can be dangerous and should be used carefully, according to doctors.
In 2012, two people were arrested after a customer at a Family Dollar store in Kansas City, Missouri, was sold a bottle of Coca-Cola with 25 laxative tablets in it, the Charlotte Observer reported.
The incident arose from a dispute between employees, and the tainted drink was meant for a store worker, The Kansas City Star reported. The victim filed a lawsuit alleging that she became ill after drinking the beverage.
