Windsor's school board has banned U.S. field trips across the river separating the Canadian city from Detroit, saying some students could be barred under President Donald Trump's travel ban.

The Greater Essex County District, which covers schools in Windsor, decided last week to end trips to the United States effective through the end of the month, reported the Detroit Free Press.

Trips to the Detroit Opera House to see the "Lion King" and the Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills, Michigan were among the trips canceled.

"It's just right now the uncertainty of whether all of our students would be able to cross," said Clara Howitt, superintendent of the 35,000-student school district.

Howitt told the Windsor Star she contacted U.S. border authorities before the decision was made and was told any students who were citizens of seven listed countries — Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Sudan, Yemen and Somalia — would be barred from crossing.

The Trump administration is considering its options after the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals blocked enforcement of an executive order affecting travel from those seven countries, said USA Today.

"Where one person doesn't go, nobody goes … we want to make sure nobody is excluded," said Scott Scantlebury," the Greater Essex County District spokesman. "We're trying to make prudent decisions."

The Star said the Canadian government has begun monitoring situations along the U.S.-Canadian border to record instances of Canadians, especially those with dual citizenships, have been denied entry.

Brian Masse, who represents Windsor West in the Canadian Parliament, said he had already heard of Canadians being turned away from the U.S. border and others declining to travel because of the uncertainty.
