A police manhunt is underway Monday after a Washington state deputy was shot and killed while responding to a home invasion in Spanaway around 11:30 p.m. Sunday.
Daniel McCartney, a 34-year-old sheriff’s deputy in Pierce County, was the first person on the scene, King 5 News reported. He chased a suspect through town on foot until he was shot.
A second suspect was shot and killed at the scene, but the escaped suspect is considered armed and dangerous.
A nearby school district canceled classes Monday because of the manhunt. Police are going door-to-door searching for the suspect, Q13 Fox reporter John Hopperstad tweeted.
McCartney joined the sheriff’s department in 2014. He was a Navy veteran and was married with three children, King 5 reported.
McCartney’s flag-draped coffin was carried from the hospital as more than a dozen fellow officers and deputies saluted their fallen comrade.
Twitter users lamented the deputy’s loss and offered prayers and condolences to his family.
