A Michigan deputy was killed by a car being pursued by police in a dramatic high speed chase that ended just outside of Detroit in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Oakland County Deputy Eric Overall, 50, was killed after he stepped out of his vehicle to put down “stop sticks” at the intersection of SB M-15 and Seymour Lake Road.

Instead of slowing down, the fleeing suspect hit the deputy before rolling his car over.

The 22-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene.

"Deputy Overall was not in the roadway at the time, and in fact was well off the roadway, and he had just deployed the 'Stop Sticks' across SB M-15,” said a statement from the sheriff’s office, according to CNN.

“It is our belief that from all evidence collected that the suspect deliberately ran down Deputy Overall, swerving to hit him.”

Overall’s death was ruled as a homicide by the medical examiner, who said the 22-year veteran deputy died from blunt force trauma.

According to WXYZ, the chase which began in the parking lot of the county jail where the suspect was making threats.

Police chased the suspect from Lapeer County, west on I-69 to southbound M-15 and to Oakland County.

The Oakland County Sheriff's office said the suspect, who was from Macomb Township, was being held at the Macomb County Jail.

According to the report, the suspect has four prior convictions for possession of marijuana and a conviction for resisting and obstructing police.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to raise funds to help Overall’s family.
