Half of Calif. Voters Stay Home

By    |   Monday, 12 November 2012 12:52 PM EST

Only about half of California's 18.2 million voters bothered to cast a ballot in this year's presidential contest,  according to the Orange County Register.

The highest voter turnout, 84.9 percent, was in Alpine County, which translated into 656 voters out of the county total of 773.

The more populous regions of the state reported much lower percentages.

Such was the case for Los Angeles County, where only 49.8 percent of registered voters showed up, accounting for 2.4 million ballots cast.

Other large counties experienced slightly better turnout rates. Republican-leaning Orange County, for example, saw a voter turnout of 54 percent. San Diego saw a 53.3 percent turnout at the polls, while 56.7 percent of voters in San Francisco went to the polls.

Near the bottom of the state voter turnout was Fresno County, where only 39.1 percent of qualified voters bothered to participate in the election.
