Romney PAC Keeps Gingrich Targeted

By    |   Sunday, 08 January 2012 12:35 PM EST

The Restore Our Future PAC that supports Mitt Romney’s bid for the Republican nomination for president will run another attack ad against Newt Gingrich on Monday because it believes the former House speaker is Romney’s biggest rival, according to the Boston Herald.

“The PAC’s entire national campaign next week — amid New Hampshire’s primary on Tuesday — will bypass the former Pennsylvania senator entirely,” the Herald reported.

The newspaper quoted Brittany Gross, a spokeswoman for the super PAC, as saying, “People don’t want Gingrich. They don’t want another Obama.”

For former Pennsylvania Sen. Santorum to pose a real threat, he would have to win in South Carolina and Florida — unlikely outcomes in the eyes of the PAC backers, said Republican strategist and Gingrich supporter William Jacobson.

“I think that the Romney campaign views Newt as still the bigger threat,” Jacobson said. “While Santorum is doing well in the polls now, I would be surprised to see them go negative.”

The super PAC organizers see Santorum “as an Iowa phenomenon,” Jacobson said. “If you see $2 million in ads, then you’ll know they’re worried about him.”

John Brabender, Santorum’s senior adviser, told the Herald that the Romney campaign should not underestimate his candidate.

“There is a tendency for people to underestimate Rick,” Brabender said. “It also asserts the position that Mitt Romney is just not a nice guy.”
