Venezuelan Man's Newtown Threats After School Massacre Get Him Locked Up

A Venezuelan man who made threatening phone calls to Newtown residents following Adam Lanza's 2012 shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School was sentenced to a year in prison on Thursday.

NBC News reported that Wilfrido Cardenas Hoffmann pleaded guilty to placing 96 calls to residents on Dec. 16, 2012, just two days after Lanza killed 20 first-graders, six school staffers, his mother, and himself.

"This is Adam Lanza. I’m gonna [expletive] kill you. You’re dead. You’re dead. You hear me? You’re dead," Cardenas Hoffman said in one of the calls, the U.S. attorney's office said in court.

He reportedly mentioned a machine gun in other calls.

Found guilty of transmitting threats in interstate or foreign commerce to injure the person of another, Cardenas Hoffman was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison, as well as three years of supervised release.

His defense attorney argued in court papers that "at the time he made the phone calls at issue in this case, there is no question that Mr. Hoffman was suffering from the symptoms of schizophrenia and unmedicated."

Cardenas Hoffman was arrested in June at Miami International Airport on his way from Mexico to Venezuela.

"These threatening calls, just two days after the tragedy, compounded the collective suffering of all of the citizens of Newtown and needlessly stressed law enforcement resources at a critical time," said U.S. Attorney Deirdre Daly. "It is reprehensible criminal conduct."
