Sandy Hook Playground Vandalism: Entrance Sign Marked Up

A Sandy Hook memorial playground was vandalized over the weekend.

The Hartford, Connecticut-based children's playground, named "Ana Grace" in honor of Ana Grace Marquez-Greene, one of the young victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, had its entryway sign vandalized with a marker, NBCWashington.com reported.

Connecticut authorities are reportedly investigating the vandalism, which they note is minor and has since been removed.

The graffiti was cleaned up late Sunday night by someone close to the family, WFSB.com reported.

The playground is situated inside a portion of Hartford's Elizabeth Park.

Though the intent of the graffiti is unclear, the message appeared to be an attempt to memorialize the girl with "B-E-K-S," a peace sign, and "Sandy Hook" written on the sign.

"It looked like they were doing something to memorialize her, but to me it's still vandalism and wasn't meant to be," parent Nicole King told WFSB.com.

"Hopefully they can find something out because it shouldn't happen to playgrounds where kids are playing, especially if it's in memory of someone," another parent Charlotte Mansfield added.

The Ana Grace playground is one of 26 playgrounds that have been built to honor those killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, where on Dec. 14, 2012, 20-year-old Adam Lanza fatally shot 20 children and six adult staff members after having killed his mother at their nearby home. Lanza eventually took his own life with a gunshot to the head.

Ana Grace's playground, which was completed last month, cost $100,000 to build and was the 18th playground constructed for the victims of the Sandy Hook shooting, WFSB.com noted.
