Justin Trudeau, the new prime minister of Canada, is under fire from opponents who say he is using taxpayer dollars to pay for two nannies hired as part of his household staff.
The country's Conservative party has pointed out that Trudeau’s employment of the nannies is in stark contrast to statements he made on the campaign trail about rich families not
needing taxpayer help, BBC reported. During his recent campaign, Trudeau called out Conservatives for wanting to allow child-care benefits and income-splitting tax credits to wealthy families.
"In these times, [then Prime Minister] Mr. Harper's top priority is to give wealthy families like his and mine $2,000," BBC quoted Trudeau from his campaign days. "We don't need it. And Canada can't afford it."
Lisa Raitt, a member of the Conservative party, called Trudeau "hypocritical" for paying the nannies $11 to $20 an hour out of public monies, rather than from out of his own pocket, according to the BBC.
Rona Ambrose, interim
Conservative leader, agreed, telling CBC News, "Mr. Trudeau repeatedly, repeatedly said, 'I am wealthy,' Mr. Trudeau said, 'My family is rich, we don't need to use taxpayer dollars for our child care.' And now he is."
A spokesperson for Trudeau told CBC in an email that the prime minister isn't increasing the household budget to pay for the nannies.
"The prime minister will not expand the household staff of the prime minister's residence. He will be adapting the staff complement to suit his family's requirements, given he is the proud father of three young children. It is an ongoing process and will be finalized in the coming days," Kate Purchase, the PM's director of communications, told CBC News.
