Miss Canada 2015's Hockey-Themed Miss Universe Costume Sticks Out

Whatever other prizes Miss Canada 2015 takes at Sunday’s 63rd Annual Miss Universe pageant, she definitely gets points for creativity in the unusual costume she wore for a preliminary competition.

The pageant participants dress up in costumes that reflect their countries, and Canada’s Chanel Beckenlehner went all-out with a flamboyant homage to hockey.

The costume had a Marie Antoinette feel, with Beckenlehner donning a white, very tall wig that featured a Stanley Cup nestled in its midst, a fan of hockey sticks surrounding her like a halo, and a working scoreboard flickering over her head.

The costume was definitely unique, but online, it went viral for all the wrong reasons. As Sports Illustrated said, “Miss Canada hockey costume horrifies universe at pageant.”

The Huffington Post called it “totally bonkers,” while Bleacher Report’s Dan Carson had a lot to say.

“I have not been watching the Miss Universe pageant. Not even a little bit,” he wrote. “Now, however, having seen the delightful insanity that is Miss Canada’s nationally themed outfit, I am realizing the huge mistake I’ve made. ... I haven’t seen the other contestants, and I don’t know if I care to. Miss America likely looks ravishing in her flowing dress of football pads, Predator drone wings and prenuptial agreements, but facts are facts: When confronted with obvious brilliance, you must tip your cap.”
