Trains Collide Head-on in Switzerland; Driver Killed, Dozens Injured

Two trains collided head-on in Switzerland Monday, killing the driver and leaving at least 35 people injured, four seriously, the Daily Mail reported.

The crash occurred at Granges-pres-Marnand in Vuad canton, which is southwest of Bern. The BBC reported that the trains were on a regional route.

“The speeds are a little lower and even if one deeply regrets the likely loss of life of one person as well as five serious injuries, the situation could have been much more catastrophic," a police spokesman told BBC.

This crash comes just a week after a train crash in Spain killed 79 people. That crash involved a high-speed passenger train that took a curve too fast and derailed.

The driver of that train, Francisco Jose Garzon Amo, has now been charged with 79 counts negligent homicide. The Spanish rail agency said the brakes should have been on about 2.5 miles before the turn.

Fox News reported that someone who helped Garzon at the crash site reported that the train driver said he was going too fast and couldn’t brake.

“He told us that he wanted to die,” Evaristo Iglesias told Antena 3 television, Fox reported.

Fox said that 70 people are still hospitalized, and that 22 of them are in critical condition.
