Trader Joe's Apple Sauces has announced a voluntarily recall because pieces of glasses may be found in the product, according to a news release.
The Manzana Products Co., Inc. is targeting three different types of Trader Joe's Unsweetened Apple Sauces, said a statement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
"Each apple sauce is packaged in a 24 oz. glass jar and customers can find the 'Best Before' date stamped on top of the lid," said the FDA. "The recall was initiated after the company received customer reports of glass found in some of these products."
"All products have been removed from store shelves and destroyed. Customers who have purchased the products listed above should not consume them, but may return it to Trader Joe's for a full refund or dispose of them."
The recalled Trader Joe's items include the Trader Joe's All Natural Unsweetened Apple Sauce, UPC code 00014359, with the best sale date through Dec. 16; Trader Joe's Organic Unsweetened Apple Sauce, UPC code 00194877, best sale date through Oct. 6; and Trader Joe's Unsweetened Gravenstein Apple Sauce, UPC code 00015905, best sales date through Aug. 8.
The All Natural Unsweetened Apple Sauce was distributed to stores in Arizona, Alabama, California, Colorado, Idaho, Louisiana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, and Washington. The other two recalled apple sauces were distributed nationally, noted Trader Joe's.
It is the second time a recall involved glass in a product has been instituted this year. In January, Sierra Nevada recalled beer in 36 states because glass could break off and fall into the bottle, reported CNN then.
Sierra Nevada said an inspection at its brewery in Mills River, North Carolina, "detected a very limited number of bottles with a flaw that may cause a small piece of glass to break off and possibly fall into the bottle, creating a risk for injury," per CNN.
