Sabra has recalled certain hummus products over fears of listeria monocytogenes contamination after the bacterium was found at one of its manufacturing facilities.

Sabra listed more than 20 different products of hummus and spreads it is recalling with more than 50 UPC codes, with "Best Before" dates through Jan. 23, 2017, according to a statement on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website. The statement urged customers with the products to throw them away.

The statement said the products were distributed to retail outlets, including food service accounts and supermarkets, in the United States and Canada.

"We're recalling this product out of an abundance of caution after finding listeria monocytogenes at the manufacturing facility, but not in tested finished product," a statement on the Sabra website said.

"We have invested heavily in technology and enhancing our processes and protocols, with guidance and input from external experts, to develop and put in place industry-leading food safety procedures, such as testing finished product from the production line every two minutes for pathogens including listeria. We want to reassure our consumers that our procedures include extensive finished product testing, and no products tested positive for contaminants," the statement continued.

Sabra products not included in the recall includes Sabra Organic Hummus, Sabra Salsa, Sabra Guacamole, and Sabra Greek Yogurt Dips, the FDA statement said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, listeriosis is a serious infection usually caused by eating food contaminated with listeria monocytogenes. The disease primarily affects older adults, pregnant women, newborns, and adults with weakened immune systems.

A person affected with listeriosis usually suffers from fever and muscle aches, sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms, according to the CDC, but the symptoms can vary from person to person. The CDC estimates that about 1,600 illnesses and 260 deaths in the United States are caused annually due to listeriosis.

Sabra said consumers can contact its consumer relations at 1-866-265-6761 for additional information about the recall. They can find a complete list of recalled products online at http://sabra.com/recall.
