Toledo Mud Hens' Sgt. Pepper's Uniforms Celebrate Beatles

By    |   Wednesday, 03 May 2017 05:13 PM

Minor league baseball team the Toledo Mud Hens will wear uniforms patterned after "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Beatles during a game on June 16.

The uniforms are blue and look like the outfit Paul McCartney wears on the cover of the Beatles album. The Toledo Mud Hens crest resembles the emblem on the album cover as well.

Minor league baseball teams often have themed nights to commemorate popular movies, music, or characters.

The "Sgt. Pepper's" album was originally released June 1, 1967, and a special 50th anniversary album will be released to mark the golden occasion with previously unreleased outtakes from the original studio recording. The album won four Grammy Awards in 1968.

The Mud Hens' jerseys will be silent-auctioned during the game to benefit the Northwest Ohio Chapter Alzheimer’s Association, and a Beatles tribute band will play a concert in Hensville Park after the game.

The Mud Hens' jersey reveal appears to have poked the bear: The Fresno Grizzlies, a triple-A Houston Astros affiliate, claimed on Twitter it revealed its own Sgt. Pepper uniforms two months ago.

The Mud Hens shot back that they had released their promo schedule first.

Philadelphia Phillies affiliate the Lehigh Valley IronPigs then jumped in to give a tongue-in-cheek list of other things the Grizzlies “invented.”

Twitter users commented about the jerseys themselves and the teams' argument over who did it first.
