A toddler was found alive in an air pocket under a capsized boat in Florida, an hour after three others in her family were rescued and her mother and father watched anxiously.

The 23-month-old girl, who was wearing a life jacket, was found after her father, mother and infant sister were pulled from the water following a boat crash on the Indian River near Cocoa about 10:30 p.m. Friday, said WFTV.

"Four patrol officers jumped in and began searching for the victims," said the Cocoa Police Department Facebook page. "A civilian in a boat nearby also assisted. The adults and the infant were quickly located but the search continued for nearly one hour for a 23-month-old girl."

"Officers Matt Rush and Cpl. Alan Worthy found the girl trapped underneath the overturned boat staying afloat in a small pocket of air. Officer Rush and Worthy pulled the child out from under the boat and got her to paramedics for treatment. She was wearing a life jacket and is in good condition along with the rest of her family. All were taken to the hospital for evaluation.".

Tammy Bossard, the mother, told WGRZ-TV she was sleeping with her 7-month-old daughter in her arms when the boat crashed.

"I woke up in the water holding Charlotte, and I woke up right next to the boat and I saw a hole in the side of the boat, and climbed on top and shoved Charlotte up there," she said.

Bossard said she could hear her other daughter crying under the board.

Rush and Worthy told WGRZ-TV that officers searched the area around the boat for the girl.

"It was very hard to see," said Worthy. "My hand in front of me, could barely see that. We know she’s under there, we're just not sure where and it was a very time-consuming process diving in from different points of the boat."

Rush said they eventually located the girl in the hull of the boat and pulled her out safely.

"Usually incidents like this don't turn out like that," Rush said. "A boating accident that severe with that much damage could have been a lot worse. Air pocket in the boat and a life jacket I would say saved her life."

The Florida Wildlife Commission, which assisted in the rescue along with the U.S. Coast Guard and Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, is taking the lead on an investigation into what caused the boat to crash and overturn, noted WFTV.
