Golf legends Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are reportedly negotiating a $10 million winner-take-all match, according to Golf magazine.
The match almost took place July 3 in Las Vegas, but negotiations with networks and corporate sponsors couldn’t be completed in time.
"We're working on a different date," Mickelson told Golf on Thursday. "I thought it was done for the third but obviously it wasn't."
The first seeds of a possible one-on-one match between the two were planted at the Masters in April, when they joined forces to play a practice round.
Those seeds took root in May when the two were grouped together during the Players Championship, ESPN reported.
At that time Mickelson suggested they skip "the ancillary stuff of a tournament and just go head-to-head and just have kind of a high-stakes, winner-take-all match."
Woods didn’t nix the notion at the time.
"I'm definitely not against that," he said then. "We'll play for whatever makes him uncomfortable."
Although the game has been lucrative for both men, the $10 million is nothing to turn their nose up to.
"It's a ridiculous amount of money," Mickelson said. "No matter how much money you have, this amount will take both of us out of our comfort zone."
Rivalry between Woods, 42, and Mickelson, 48, dates back to their early days, “when Woods was an intriguing amateur prospect and Mickelson a hot shot young pro being billed as the next Nicklaus,” Golf reported.
A winner-take-all match will give the winner ultimate bragging rights for the rest of his life — not to mention $10 million.
Some on social media thought it was too late for the duo -— a head-to-head match should have taken place 10 years ago. Others said they’d watch it anyway — and looked forward to it.
And then there was this. Ouch!
