Surveillance Cameras Don't Stop Drive-By Shootings

By    |   Tuesday, 15 November 2011 11:28 AM EST

Surveillance cameras installed in Miami’s Liberty Square public housing project are doing nothing to curb the plague of drive-by shootings terrorizing residents, The Miami Herald reported Tuesday.

Tenants and police had hoped he $270,000 closed-circuit camera system would discourage shooters and help investigators track down the offenders. But there have been several glitches in the system and cameras are often down, the Herald said.

“The cameras do not work,” said resident Zandary Stanley, whose home was shot up on Oct. 15 by shooters aiming at another target. She said she doesn’t let her children watch TV in the living room after dark or get snacks from the kitchen because they would have to pass too many exposed windows.

Maria Williams, 43, told the paper her home was shot up on Nov. 1. “I’m low-income, but I have a right to have a safe environment.”
