Scramble on to Grab Huckabee Supporters

Thursday, 19 May 2011 11:10 AM EDT

Supporters of Mike Huckabee in Iowa who had mounted an unaffiliated campaign in the state for the former governor of Arkansas are unclear where to throw their support next. In the social conservative and religious state that’s first in the nation to hold a 2012 presidential caucus, there’s now a scramble of sorts to garner Huckabee backers, Fox News reported.

iowa, scramble, huckabee, supportersRandy Davis, former GOP chair in Wapello County, began a grassroots campaign for Huckabee’s 2012 presidential bid after supporting him during his first run for president four years ago.

"I just took it upon myself to do what I could to get a ground operation started," Davis said. "So, I contacted some people, and over the course of time we contacted some of the former (2008) county (campaign) chairmen and precinct captains, probably between 500 and 600 people."

Davis said he’s unclear who all those people will now back.

“As far as who Huckebee supporters are now going to support," Davis said, "I just really don't have a good answer for that."

Businessman Herman Cain thinks he can get a share of Huckabee's supporters. "When the evangelicals and the (conservative) Christians have a look at my background and they see my religious affiliation, it'll be a natural," Cain said.

Ryan Rhodes, chairman of the Iowa Tea Party, believes Huckabee supporters will go to his favored candidate: Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn. "If Michele Bachmann's campaign puts it together, I think she's going to be a clear front-runner in Iowa,” he said.
